The First Weeks of SMI
George S. - SMI 2024
“But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.” (Matthew 6:33)
The past two weeks have been quite eventful, but I feel blessed because God has been looking out for me. It has been a very eye-opening experience, and I truly appreciate your prayers.
We have been divided into groups and assigned to different churches in the area. Near our designated churches, we go door-to-door or set up tables to conduct various health screenings. The church I have been working with is called The Rock. It initially started as a ministry to support children from the streets by teaching them boxing and helping them find jobs or attend school. They have a boxing ring inside the church. Our interpreter, Ray, is an incredible person of God who is very familiar with the Kensington area. He works in an office where he assists and refers several people to detox every day.
I want to mention that even though the state of this neighborhood is quite challenging, I have witnessed a very strong and supportive community, with many people who are devoted to Jesus. The people here are very open to discussing their struggles and always appreciate when we offer to pray for them.
Some individuals struggling with drug use have expressed a desire to get clean but are apprehensive due to negative experiences with healthcare services that have either turned them away or because they are not willing to go through withdrawal. Please pray for these individuals to find the strength and determination to make positive changes.
Additionally, regarding Kensington, the mayor has recently initiated efforts to clear out and disperse crowds from certain areas. As a result, some streets and parks in Kensington have become empty. While this has been a positive change for many who no longer feel confined to their home, it has also left many people displaced without a secure place to be. Please pray for a positive outcome from these changes that will benefit the community in Kensington.
Lastly I am thankful to work with a really good group who are all hardworking and God-loving.
